Heat-pump lead generation in Prince Edward Island

Heat pumps were the primary heating system for 36% of PEI households in 2023, the highest share among the provinces. With the main equipment rebates closed, PEI marketing is about replacement, service and reputation.

Prince Edward Island is the most mature heat-pump market among the provinces. More than a third of households already rely on one as their main heating system, and the province's main equipment rebates have closed. That makes PEI less about convincing first-time buyers and more about being the installer people trust for the second, third and fourth heat pump.

The PEI buyer

Most PEI prospects either own a heat pump or know several people who do.

Statistics Canada puts heat pumps as the main system in 36% of Island homes in 2023, ahead of oil at 28%, electricity at 18% and wood at 8%. The buyer groups follow from that:

  • Owners of older units facing replacement, often of a single-zone mini-split installed years ago.
  • Oil-heated households still weighing a conversion, now without the closed free heat pump program.
  • Homes with partial coverage, where one head heats the main floor and the owner wants the rest of the house covered.
  • Service customers, a large and recurring audience on an island with this many units.

Charlottetown and Summerside are the main markets, with Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall close behind. Everywhere on the island, referrals and reviews do much of the selling.

Climate and seasonality

The Gulf of St. Lawrence takes the edge off Island winters, but they are still cold and snowy, and the heating season is long. In practice:

  • Fall is the conversion and replacement window.
  • Winter is service season, when failed or underperforming units generate urgent calls.
  • Spring and early summer suit planned upgrades and cooling-led campaigns.

Programs, as of October 2026

PEI's incentive picture changed substantially in 2026:

If your website still advertises a free heat pump on PEI, take it down this week.

Regulators installers deal with

PEI's Inspection Services cover electrical, plumbing, propane and pressure equipment, with separate licences for mechanical contractors, plumbing contractors and propane personnel. Workers' compensation runs through the WCB of PEI. We link to these and leave compliance to installers.

What a mature market changes

In most provinces, heat-pump marketing is still about persuading people to try the technology. On PEI, many buyers have lived with a heat pump for years and have opinions about brands, noise, defrost cycles and service. That changes the content you need:

  • Less "what is a heat pump", more "what should the next one be". Upgrade guides and model-change explanations matter more than introductions.
  • Service quality becomes the differentiator. How fast you answer a no-heat call in February is part of your marketing.
  • Past customers are your biggest audience. A simple list of everyone you've installed for, with install dates, is the start of a replacement campaign.

How we'd approach PEI

  1. Clean up rebate content across your site, ads and Google Business Profile, so no closed program is promised. See rebate marketing.
  2. Lead with replacement and service, including a maintenance plan you market to past customers. Our quote follow-up work covers the cadence.
  3. Write island-specific comparison content on oil conversion and single-zone vs whole-home coverage. See comparison pages.
  4. Make reviews a weekly habit, because on PEI your reputation travels faster than your ads.

Frequently asked questions

Are efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates still available?

As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 2026-04-15, though purchases made between 2025-04-15 and 2026-04-15 may still be eligible within one year of purchase. The free heat pump program page states applications are closed. Check the Government of PEI pages before mentioning either.

What should a PEI installer market without a rebate?

Replacement and upgrade of existing heat pumps, maintenance plans, multi-zone and ducted upgrades, and honest oil-conversion comparisons. On a small island, reviews and referrals carry unusual weight.

Is there any current PEI program related to heat pumps?

A June 2026 federal agreement expanded PEI's free insulation program for income-qualified homeowners. Insulation isn't a heat pump, but a better-insulated home changes sizing and comfort, so it's worth explaining.
